Owasippe 3 Nighter

News from St. Juliana Boy Scout Troop 965
The Boy Scouts of St. Juliana just returned from a 3-night camping trip over Easter Break that took us to the Owasippe Scout Reservation in Michigan. We spent two nights camped on the shore of Lake Wolverine and another night sleeping under the stars at remote Bass Lake. We backpacked to Bass Lake with all of our gear, went fishing and boating, and watched the stars at night. On another afternoon we fired off model rockets which we had built before the trip.
Our next camping weekend is to Warren Dunes along with the Webelos Scouts of Pack 3965. The Dunes trip is an annual outing that everyone enjoys.
After that we start preparing for longer summer outings. A crew of older Scouts is prepping for a six-day canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Wilderness of northern Minnesota in June and the whole Troop is starting to think about a week at summer camp in July.
If you are thinking about joining the Troop this is a great time to check us out.

Top Researchers Reach Out
You’ve heard about National Lab Day, with STEM professionals visiting classrooms nationwide. It’s not to be confused with the U.S. National Laboratories, where top researchers are busily studying plasma, cryogenics, renewable energy, and counter-terrorism. Yet, many Labs also offer school visits, complete with mobile labs, hands-on kits, and experts. Here, we’ve highlighted four Labs in New Jersey, Illinois, Washington, and New Mexico. Teachers elsewhere can explore the online resources or check for Labs near them.

LESSON PLAN
Crystal Clarity
This activity from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory involves students, grades 6-8, in the formation of crystals on glass slides. In conducting their experiment, students learn about basic principles that guide the work of materials engineers and scientists.

Science on Call
Several National Laboratories offer web-based educational materials. Some, including the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, send scientists and engineers out for visits to area classrooms.

Museum Roadshows Aid Tight Budgets
With tight funding and other pressures, schools are taking fewer field trips. So now, museums are taking their show to the schools, via classroom visits, videoconferencing, and computer-based lessons. The outreach benefits schools and museums, but kids could lose out, missing “the wow factor of actually seeing that huge Triceratops skeleton.”

What Was It Like?
If your school joined National Lab Day to sponsor a visiting engineer, scientist or professional, we want to hear from you. What were the students’ reactions, the benefits or drawbacks? Do you have plans for future years? Teachers are the real experts, so please, send us an email and fill us in!
To celebrate National Lab Day, through the month of May, eGFI is offering a free poster and 5 additional copies of eGFI magazine for every order of 25 magazines ($100). To order, go to the eGFI store, request any multiple of 25 magazines, and type “NLD” in the box marked “Other.” Leave the poster quantity blank – we’ll know to send you one! This offer will be valid through May 30, 2010.

News from St. Juliana Boy Scout Troop 965
Troop 965 combined a service opportunity and a trip to Vertical Endeavors last Saturday. The Troop invited the Webelos II Scouts from Pack 3965 to join us for a morning of challenging climbing on many different walls and ropes. After the climbing trip, we gathered the food we collected from our families and friends and donated it to the St. Juliana Food Pantry.
Our next outing is a weekend cabin camping trip to Camp Betz in Michigan. We are hoping for a snowy weekend so that we can sled on the hills in the area around our camp.
Troop 965 meets at St. Juliana every Monday night at 7:00 in the Gym or School Hall. If you would like more information about joining us please call Scoutmaster John Pelrine at (773) 594-9555 or visit our Troop website at www.troop965.us. New Scouts (Boys 10 1/2 years old and up) are always welcome.
News from St. Juliana Boy Scout Troop 965
Troop 965 went cabin camping near the Rock River in Oregon, Illinois last weekend. Camp Lowden is situated in rolling and forested hills that provide miles of hiking and exploring. Two of the Scouts completed their First Class cooking requirement by planning the weekend menu, shopping for the food, and supervising other Scouts who helped with the cooking and clean-up. We ate well! Other Scouts practiced navigating through the woods with map and compass on a five mile hike.
We are also preparing for the Webelos II Cub Scouts to join our Troop next month. With our newest members we will be over 40 Scouts strong at St. Juliana.
The month of February 2010 marks the 100th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America. The BSA is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. At St. Juliana, Scouting provides a program for young men that builds character, reinforces values, teaches the responsibilities of citizenship, and develops personal fitness. We are deeply grateful to the parish for sponsorship since 1932 – 78 years!
Here are some fast facts about Troop 965 from our recent report to Fr. Kanonik. In 2009:
- 39 Scouts were registered in the Troop – young men from 6th grade through high school are members
- We held 45 Troop meetings, 8 weekend camping trips, a week at summer camp, and a week in the Florida Keys
- As a group we spent over 500 nights out camping and almost 1300 miles hiking
- Scouts and Leaders gave nearly 500 hours of service to the parish and community through Eagle service projects and other activities
- We collected over 200 pounds of food for the parish food pantry
- Troop 965 won the 2009 District Klondike Derby (winter outdoor skills) and finished 4th in the District First Aid Meet

Like the faculty blogs on the St. Juliana web site, we’ll be able to post more recent information and news about our Troop!
Tomorrow night, Monday, January 25th, is Advancement night for the Troop. So EVERYONE bring their Scout Book. We will be reviewing the books to track status and make sure anyone close to completion of a rank can move up at our next Court of Honor. The Court of Honor is scheduled for February 22nd!
